Japanese Methods.

When taken in conjunction with the matter published on page 104 the statements recently made by the Yoko- -hama correspondent of the "Frankfurter Zeitung" conver a significance impossible of exaggeration. The tenour of his communication as given in "The Financial Times" (London) is as follows:-

An influentially supported Japanese organization, presided over by Count Okuma, has been set on foot, nominally to establish closer trade relations between Japan and various European countries, but really in order to get rid, as far as possible, of the English, American, German and French mercantile houses established in the various Japanese Ports. The move- -ment, it is alleged, proceeds not as much from any reasoned out plan of campaign in the interests of Japanese trade, as from an exaggerated and mistaken spirit of patriotism, which objects to foreign import firms deriving middle men profits, while failing to appreciate the services these firms have rendered in the past, and are still rendering, to Japanese trade prosperity. Condensed, the letter runs as follows:-

A new limited liability company is being at present advertised in Germany under the title of the German-Japanese Trade Exchange Committee (Nichi Doku Keizai Chosa Kai, rendered into German as Deutsch-Japanischer Verkehrsauschusz). High Japanese Officials, manufacturers, business men and financiers are stated to belong to it, such as Count Okuma, who is its

President;;
